Jet-Puffed Jelly Beans

Happy Easter, folks!

To close out this season on A Boy and His Beans, we have another curious cross-branding exercise from Flix Candy, Jet-Puffed Jelly Beans. Yes, that would be the brand most famously known for marshmallows, and these do say “marshmallow flavored” right there on the package.

We’ve see marshmallow flavors in a number of collections reviewed previously, and even reviewed another marshmallow-focused set (Peeps Jelly Beans). How will these turn out? Let’s see!

Size and shape

Like the other Flix Candy-produced sets (Fruity Pebbles and Creamsicle), the size and shape of these beans (and the consistency of both) is perfect. Kudos to Flix for clearly caring more about this than most manufacturers, rather than just phoning it in because it’s not their own brand name at stake.

Chewability

Once you get past the looks and get them in your mouth, these jelly beans differ significantly from the other Flix Candy beans. Chewability is significantly improved. They are much easier to chew than the Pebbles and Creamsicle beans, while still having a decent amount of pushback. There is also very little sticking to the teeth.

Texture

The texture of the Jet-Puffed beans also diverges in several ways. First, the outsides are not as smooth; they have a very subtle texture to them. This alternate shell formulation results in it breaking apart in bigger hunks, which I always appreciate.

Finally, the insides, while smooth, are a bit softer and gummier. This aspect is a bit of regression, unfortunately.

Flavors

  • :white_large_square: Marshmallow

When purchasing the bag, I noted the aforementioned “marshmallow flavored” description and the lack of other flavors being identified on the package. I was quite disappointed to confirm my fear that, despite there being six different colors of jelly beans here, they all taste the same. Like the Creamsicle jelly beans, there is just a single flavor in this bag.

It is at least a decent marshmallow flavor, though. Avila tried to tell me they just taste like sugar, but it’s not like the taste of just a bunch of white sugar crystals – we’ve had terrible beans that taste like that in the past – but there is a distinct note that imparts the flavor of marshmallow to them.

I just wish there were other flavors imparted, as well.

The one-of-each test

As there ends up only being one flavor, this category will not be scored.

Conclusion

Well, I’m sorry to end the year on a fairly banal set of beans, but the schedule can’t always work out perfectly, can it? If you like marshmallow, these are worth checking out, but let’s hope for some more interesting new releases next year (Spoiler alert: I’m holding over two sets with a longer shelf life that I’m pretty excited about.) See you then!
